No visual representation of Egypt would be complete without the three Great Pyramids of Giza, which is where we'll turn our lenses first. Photograph them individually and then as a trio, taking advantage of the bold simplicity of the vibrant blue sky and sandy beige desert landscape, as well as the dramatic and angular shadows cast by these majestic monuments. Switching gears to the bustling atmosphere of a Middle Eastern marketplace, we will dive into the narrow alleyways of the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Your photos will seem to take themselves as you encounter vivid colors of spices and fabrics, lively sellers, hopeful bargainers, and unique and intricate architecture at every turn. The Great Sphinx, the largest monolith in the world, is another not-to-be-missed photo opportunity that you can be sure is on the itinerary.
Traveling on to the oasis city of Bahareya, we'll spend a full day exploring the famous White Desert and Crystal Mountain, both of which boast otherworldly geological aspects you'll be anxious to capture. Here you will also have the chance to photograph camels and their drivers in this most natural and fitting of settings. The Temple of Philae is a sight to be seen and one positively brimming with ancient history. Step back for a more grand composition or get up close to the hieroglyphics on the many obelisks. Travel up the Nile aboard our floating hotel with your camera in hand as we capture life along the river while fallukahs pass by. Sailing on to Kom Ombo and the Temple of Edfu, you'll discover how the locals make just as intriguing subject matter as the historic temples.
Noted as "the world's greatest open-air museum," the city of Luxor is a veritable treasure trove of photo opportunities. From the elaborate ancient burial ground of the Valley of the Kings to the vast pylons and pillars of the Karnak temples in Thebes, the visual wonder of this grand locale will translate into the images you create and will amaze future viewers of your work. Hello Fellow Trekkers!
Egypt! Home of The Great Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx, The Nile River and Luxor. The travel itinerary looks fantastic; this will be my first time to Egypt and I’m excited.
Before I travel to far off destinations on assignment or vacation, I make it a point to run through my checklist to make certain all my gear is in order. It’s very important to make sure your camera(s) are in good working order, firmware updates are current, and that you have plenty of media cards. A trek of this length requires a method of backing up my images and I would recommend an external drive or two.
I plan on carrying a photo backpack on this trek, 2 camera bodies, 3 lenses (14mm-24mm, 24mm-70mm, 80mm-400mm), one flash and a lightweight tripod. If you are bringing a new camera or lens with you, please familiarize yourself with it thoroughly and bring your owners manual with you.
I’m treating this trip as a once in a lifetime experience, and as such, I am preparing myself as much as possible. I’m researching the type of photo opportunities available to us as well as leaning more about the history and culture. I’m even learning to “Walk Like An Egyptian” ala Steve Martin.
I was introduced to a few videos I thought you might be interested in, pretty certain you can find these at your local library.
