RECAP

The Philadelphia Trek was lead by our Mentors David Tejada and Michael Clark and focused on the use of “lighting”. While David and Michael have different styles and subject matter they are both highly skilled and have extensive knowledge of the subject. Their classroom presentations demonstrated and explained the use of strobes and artificial light to create the mood of an image. The slide presentations demonstrated their skills and very clearly explained this complicated subject.

Travel with our mentors and try out all of the latest equipment from Nikon! Including world class digital SLRs, Nikkor lenses and the Coolpix line of Digital Cameras.

Over the three days we were able to practice the techniques with the aid of models in various venues. The conservatories at Longwood Gardens offered a beautiful setting full of fall flowers and color. Eastern State Penitentiary, an arrested ruin that has not been used as a prison since the 1970’s, offered access to three cell blocks not open to the public. Again, this was a very interesting venue for using lighting techniques with models. A double-decker bus tour through the city offered great views of many of Philadelphia’s famous sights, and while the weather did not cooperate, some great images were captured.

A walking tour of the Olde City section of the city gave us the opportunity to photograph the narrow streets and historic landmarks. Again, David and Michael gave lighting demonstrations.

This was an informative workshop covering a difficult subject. Our mentors were very highly skilled, creative, fun, and conducted an exciting workshop which enhanced our skills. One classmate was heard to exclaim, “I now understand the dreaded flash!”
